What’s Your COVID Profile?

COVID is not a single issue split between alarmists and denialists, though the conversation seems to be a rage between the two polar opposites. That’s how it is with most issues these days — the media, social in particular, feeds on the fight between extremes, making it look like there’s a total war of ideas, ideologies, philosophies, sexes, genders, policies, views, everything, and funnily enough, it all seems to divide clearly between the left and the right, as if every issue was just a facet of the bipartisan duel.

Regardless of how bleak, divisive, and polarised it all feels, I’m sure there are endless masses — perhaps the 80 percent of the 10/80/10 rule of leadership — that either don’t know what to think or have a much more reasonable view of the situation. The most vocal advocates tend to make any issue a matter of extremes and absolutes but a lot of people are divided, and right now we see none of the 80 percent and all of the extremes. I wish I could see the nuanced middle. I wish I could hear the voice of the silent masses that either self-sensor themselves, stay silent until they know what they think, or keep waiting for all the data to come in.

I wish there was an anonymous questionnaire that detailed everyone’s COVID profile — or any other big issue profile. Not so much so that we’d see how big a portion of people were actually left and actually right, but so that we’d see what people actually think about the nuances of the issue.

We treat everything related to COVID as a unilateral yes or no, as alarmism or denialism depending on the view, but it really is a long and complex list of smaller issues. Just because someone is against the vaccine mandate, doesn’t mean they also believe the vaccine is more harmful than the disease and contains a Gates foundation microchip to follow and subjugate people while the different sorts of passports drive a new totalitarian world order. Nor does taking the vaccine mean you’re up for every and all measures against COVID.

I’m beginning to be so fed up with the whole issue, with many of its details, and especially with the polarisation around it, that I’m going to skip explaining myself further. I’m actually going to drop the subject after this completely, both personally and in here, because I don’t want to participate in the fight. Mostly because I don’t know, and neither do you.

Yet, in the spirit of openness and some insight, I will add a prototype of my own profile underneath. It includes the evolution of my thinking as well with the smaller point reflecting my initial views and the larger reflecting my current views. Subject to further change, by the way.

I don’t know, but I have a feeling that a lot of people would understand the situation much more thoroughly if they only knew they weren’t alone with their complex views. I have a feeling the fight only looks polarised. A lot of people left, right, and center are trying to bring nuance in the discussion, but the loud extremes consider any and all objections to their views as heresy and idiocy, so the voices of reason tend to die in the center.

Let me know if you disagree.
